Agikuyu Rendille and Borana Exploring Fluidity of Identity of Kenya Officially, Kenya recognizes 42 ethnic identities. However, Kenya is older than Kenya. Considering the Rift Valley as the birthplace of our human story, Kenya as part of the African continent has been in longstanding yet continuous cultural diversification. In this sense, Kenya is older than Europe and older than the abstraction of Africa.
The number 42 is a politically gross simplification of those vibrant cultures. The complexity of identity and richness of cultural history confound the delineation of borders. The challenge to distill this diversity into one unifying story is as old as its conception – and it is the challenge underpinning this [project]. I am a fool for trying. However, this [project] tackles with this riddle.
