For the past five years, I’ve been working remotely for a variety of local and international organisations, doing web content writing, curating and editing, translation, SEO writing/editing, proofreading, nonfiction ghostwriting, and social research consulting. I have more than 20 years’ experience in social science research – both as a practitioner and as a lecturer at post-graduate level.
I have a strong capacity to find and absorb substantial amounts of information. I am a fast reader and a quick study. I have a master’s degree in Development Studies which is concerned with social-to-market interactions, markets and trade, employment, economic participation, inequality, poverty alleviation, and other issues relating to the forward-moving transformation of developing countries.
I obtained my master’s degree from the University of Johannesburg in 2013, and have been working as an academic researcher, writer, publisher, editor, proofreader, and lecturer for more than 20 years in research institutes, university departments, non-profit organisations, funding organisations, and donors, as well as public sector development programs.
I’m keen to begin a PhD that incorporates themes such as financial and economic vulnerability, unemployment, the role of the developmental state in the provision of welfare services, social security services that enable and empower people to find their way back into employment and full economic participation, as well as (mental) illness and economic insecurity. Recent experiences in my life have led me to a level of understanding of these topics that is far beyond academic.
As a completely home-based worker, I’ve developed a high level of self-discipline, time management, and organisational skills, as well as a deep understanding of a broad array of technological tools to allow for remote teamwork arrangements such as Slack, ClickUp, Asana, and Bootcamp, and I have a fully equipped home office. I am, of course, also completely fluent with the MS Office suite of applications.
I thank you for your time in reading this letter and hope my submission is of interest to you.
Kind regards,
Lilo F. du Toit
